Every Nurse is a Palliative Nurse: Alleviating Serious Health-Related Suffering Worldwide

Billy Rosa, PhD, MBE, ACHPN, FAANP, FAAN, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Betty Ferrell, PhD, RN, FPCN, FAAN, Director and Professor of the Division of Nursing Research and Education at the City of Hope and Principal Investigator of the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), will describe the role of all nurses in alleviating health-related suffering during COVID-19 and beyond. This discussion addresses how to integrate palliative care throughout nursing specialties in the context of COVID-19 and at the end of life with considerations for nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nurse leaders. Implications for local and global action will be addressed to achieve patient-identified goals through the lens of palliative nursing.

Cleveland Clinic Chief Caregiver Officer Kelly Hancock on Her Unique Role, Caregiver Resiliency and Nursing Challenges in COVID-19

Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, FAAN, discussed her new role as Chief Caregiver Officer at Cleveland Clinic and how nursing leaders are being increasingly challenged to advance patient care. In the new role, Dr. Hancock will serve as executive leader for the Nursing Institute and Human Resources. This is the first position of its kind at Cleveland Clinic and was created to help enable team-based delivery of superior care and align all aspects of engagement for the organization’s 77,000 caregivers.
Dr. Hancock was joined by Tipton Health Executive Nursing Consultant, Mary DelGuidice. Mary, MSN, BS, RN, CENP, who also serves as Senior Fellow for the Center of Health Outcomes and Policy Research, UPenn school of Nursing.

Led by former Pennsylvania Hospital CNO Mary Del Guidice, MSN, BS, RN, CENP, this session will help you develop a strategic approach for leading through a crisis. It includes communication and visibility strategies that engender transparency, strength, resilience, empathy and empowerment. A nursing leader’s toolkit will be available for attendees.
Successfully Deploy Your Most Valuable Resource – Staffing Implications and Prioritization During Crisis
Vice President of Client Services and Chief Clinical Officer for MedPro Healthcare Staffing Rosemarie Aznavorian, DNP, RN, CCWP, CCRN-K, CENP, explained a successful approach to rapid assessment of available staffing resources and focus on optimizing internal staffing and considerations for staffing deployment. Leveraging supplemental staffing partners and affiliate providers was also covered.
Defining the Nurse Executive’s Critical Role in a Crisis
Former Texas Health Resources Executive Vice President and System Chief Nurse Executive Joan Clark, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CENP, FACHE, FAAN, FAONL, provided an experiential perspective on the role of the nurse executive during a crisis – ensuring nursing’s safety and morale while promoting a safe environment for patient care. The discussion focused on coordinating operations to assure efficiency and effectiveness as well as coordinating staff education to safely provide care during evolving situations.
Making Time for “Self-Care Moments” For You and Your Nursing Team
Mary Del Guidice explained the key role of a leader in enculturating staff self-care and described methods to incorporate self-care into any situation at every level.
Authentic and Extraordinary Leadership for Achieving Success
Kim Nagy, former Northwest Community Healthcare EVP and CNO, shared a unique experiential perspective on the role that authentic leadership, peer support and resiliency all play in achieving organizational imperatives. This session will help identify leadership characteristics and develop support systems that add value to your professional stories/experiences, enabling the nurse leader to achieve a higher level of resiliency and professional accomplishment.
S.O.S. Response: Solid Operational Strategies to Help Your Nurses Manage Traumatic Stress
Medical traumatologist Dr. Chrys Parker, Ed.D., J.D., ECA-LM, used an entertaining approach to explain the biology of traumatic stress and outline fast-track strategies for its effective management. Nurses are heroic caregivers, but are also vulnerable to traumatic stressors and the toll which these take on operational and clinical effectiveness. Dr. Parker is a Fellow of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, Certified in Illness (Medical) Trauma and Forensic Traumatology, the President of the American Board for Certification of Clinical Education and Training, as well as an Assistant Professor Adjunct at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Leading from the Front Lines—Nurse Executives Discuss the Challenges of Managing the COVID Crisis

Ambulatory Nurses: Uniquely Positioned to Lead Through A Pandemic

Rachel Start, director of Ambulatory Nursing, Nursing Practice and Magnet Performance at Rush Oak Park Hospital, discussed the role that has emerged related to the ambulatory nurse in the last several years, specifically where care coordination, population health, management of social determinants are concerned. She was joined by Nancy May, chief nurse executive at the University of Michigan Medicine, to cover how these unique competencies and skills positioned ambulatory nurses to be well prepared for rapid and effective change to meet the demands of the COVID 19 Pandemic. This discussion included current issues, challenges and concerns relative to the ambulatory nursing practice environment and the continuing COVID 19 Crisis. Rachel has also served as the co-chair of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) Nurse Sensitive Indicator Taskforce.
