Every Nurse is a Palliative Nurse: Alleviating Serious Health-Related Suffering Worldwide

Billy Rosa, PhD, MBE, ACHPN, FAANP, FAAN, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Psycho-Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Betty Ferrell, PhD, RN, FPCN, FAAN, Director and Professor of the Division of Nursing Research and Education at the City of Hope and Principal Investigator of the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), will describe the role of all nurses in alleviating health-related suffering during COVID-19 and beyond. This discussion addresses how to integrate palliative care throughout nursing specialties in the context of COVID-19 and at the end of life with considerations for nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nurse leaders. Implications for local and global action will be addressed to achieve patient-identified goals through the lens of palliative nursing.

Cleveland Clinic Chief Caregiver Officer Kelly Hancock on Her Unique Role, Caregiver Resiliency and Nursing Challenges in COVID-19

Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, FAAN, discussed her new role as Chief Caregiver Officer at Cleveland Clinic and how nursing leaders are being increasingly challenged to advance patient care. In the new role, Dr. Hancock will serve as executive leader for the Nursing Institute and Human Resources. This is the first position of its kind at Cleveland Clinic and was created to help enable team-based delivery of superior care and align all aspects of engagement for the organization’s 77,000 caregivers.

Dr. Hancock was joined by Tipton Health Executive Nursing Consultant, Mary DelGuidice. Mary, MSN, BS, RN, CENP, who also serves as Senior Fellow for the Center of Health Outcomes and Policy Research, UPenn school of Nursing.

S.O.S. Response: Solid Operational Strategies to Help Your Nurses Manage Traumatic Stress

Medical traumatologist Dr. Chrys Parker, Ed.D., J.D., ECA-LM, used an entertaining approach to explain the biology of traumatic stress and outline fast-track strategies for its effective management. Nurses are heroic caregivers, but are also vulnerable to traumatic stressors and the toll which these take on operational and clinical effectiveness. Dr. Parker is a Fellow of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, Certified in Illness (Medical) Trauma and Forensic Traumatology, the President of the American Board for Certification of Clinical Education and Training, as well as an Assistant Professor Adjunct at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
